Alcatraz Island is a small island that was used as a military fortification, a military prison , and a federal prison. Now, Alcatraz is a national parkland with historic gardens, tidepools, bird colonies, and bay view beyond compare. This park is listed as one of America’s most fascinating National Park sites. Alcatraz was closed as federal prison on 1963 due to deteriorating buildings and high operating costs. There are four cellblocks in the prison. A Block was not used to house inmates during the federal penitentiary year. Cell B and C blocks (336 cells were considered as general cells. D blocks was used to house unruly inmates or for isolation. No prisoner could escape from Alcatraz except for “June 1962 Alcatraz escape” whis is now still misterious. Al Capone and Robert “the Birdman” Stroud were the most popular inmates in Alcatraz.
